Our Community Tutors Barbara and Gi-Gi who come every Thursday to help in the Year One classrooms joined in the fun of RED day. They loved helping the students build their cubby houses and seeing the books they had chosen to bring in to read.

To celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week, Broulee Public School held a RED Day to encourage everyone to Read Every Day. Students participated in reading activities including making cubbies to read their favourite books in, making bookmarks, reading stories from the IWB and books, making a reading sign and making a book as a class. Students dressed in red to further enjoy the day. Each class in the school had to come up with as many different things we can read as possible. 1J students came up with 100! Some of them included: -books, magazines, newspapers, brochures and comics -computers, iPads, iPods and text messages -worksheets, posters, charts and signs -clothing, jewellery, shoes and bags -labels on food, toys, clothes and sports equipment Students showed their amazing ability to think broadly in answering this challenge. Here are some photos to show the fun we had. We had a week filled with AFL.
On Monday we started AFL Skills with Kate. We warmed up and then did some ball handling, finishing off with hand-balling. Next week we are going to do come kicking. She will be visiting our school to work with us for the next two Mondays. Then on Wednesday we had a visit from AFL star Tim Mohr. Tim plays for the Greater Western Sydney Giants and he answered all our questions. Robert was chosen to stand next to Tim to show just how tall he is. Robert was lucky enough to get a signed cap for being such a great sport. As part of our new science unit Paddock to Plate, we learnt about how honey is made. We then made some honey joys and watched the butter melt, the sugar dissolve and the honey become thinner as it was heated. Once the honey joys were made, we cooked them and ate some. We even made enough to take some home to our families. Students made a cookbook in literacy groups this week and this includes the honey joys recipe to make some at home.
Eva and Stella won prizes in the Mayor's Writing Challenge this year. They attended a yummy morning tea at the Council Chambers to receive their book vouchers and certificates. Their stories were very creative and they put a lot of effort into them. Well done girls!
Here is a very proud Mrs Jones with her two talented authors. |
