Every Friday Year One split into two groups and participate in sport activities. This year we are focussing on the twelve fundamental movement skills which research has shown are very important for children to master. Mastering these skills help students to successfully participate in sports and physical activities in their future years. This week Mrs Jones took balancing activities and Mrs Elliott led the students in throwing and catching.
Today we participated in Clean Up Australia Day. The students were very diligent in picking up rubbish behind the school building, on the school oval and around the playgrounds and basketball courts. Year One filled two big bags with rubbish and hope that the students stop dropping their packages after eating.
Three more very deserving Award Winners in 1J this week. Congratulations Kiran, Katie and Hugh for good listening, neat work and thoughtful contributions to class discussions.
Thanks to Stacey for organising a visit from Bernadette Davies from Council with her impressive shell and beach collection. Bernadette shared her collection and knowledge with Year One and the students enjoyed learning about sea animals, shells and looking after our beaches. We are creating a book about them which will be added to our bl
This week is the 'c/k' sound which can be made lots of different ways. We have made kites and cats and practised writing 'c' and 'k'. In the literacy game we learnt some letter blends and played bingo and did puzzles about them. We used KidPix on the computers and Doodle Buddy on the iPads to practise writing words and sentences. We also read books in reading groups and answered questions about them. It was a lot of learning and a lot of fun!
Congratulations to Hayley, Eva and Ruby for winning our Class Awards this week. These three girls have been listening well and always follow directions. They also complete their work with care. Well done girls and keep up the great work!
Congratulations to our first six Award Winners for the year, Ebony, Pypar, Robert, Kai, Dein and Ellie. It was difficult for Mrs Jones to choose them as all students in 1J have made a really smooth transition into Year One. Congratulations to the Award Winners and all students for their super efforts this year.
We have started Maths Groups in 1J and have been doing a range of activities for students to practise their numbers. They are getting really good at knowing the numbers before and after a given number. We find that games and using concrete materials helps with learning and really makes maths fun!
Our Literacy Groups are in their second week and the students are really enjoying them. They run Tuesday to Friday from 9am-10am and the more parent helpers the better! Students are placed in groups and they rotate through 6 literacy-based activities including iPads, computers, craft, fine motor, literacy games and reading comprehension. These activities are based on our spelling sound of the week. Please talk to your children about the activities they have been doing. Below are our two new students Ebony and Pypar with their balloons filled with 'b' words. They have settled in well and are bright, happy additions to Year One.
The new school year has started and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all families to the website of 1J. I am looking forward to a fantastic year. Our first week together has included lots of "getting to know you" activities as well as Maths and Literacy Groups. Thank you to the parents who have already offered to help, we really appreciate it.
